North Oldham girls basketball started fast and withstood a second quarter run for its second district win of the year, defeating Trimble County 72-53 in Bedford Friday evening. The Lady Mustangs led by as many as 16 points before Trimble County closed its deficit to one possession, but North Oldham used its defense to create turnovers that returned its advantage to double digits.
Sophie Hale and Dani Monroe made back-to-back 3-pointers as North Oldham scored the game’s first eight points.
Kylie Vize went coast-to-coast following a defensive rebound, scoring in transition to extend North Oldham’s advantage to double digits for the first time. Vize made a 3-pointer on the next possession, giving North Oldham an 18-5 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter.
After trailing by 16 points, Trimble County scored the first six points of the second quarter. Kelsey Lubker ended a North Oldham scoring drought that lasted for more than three minutes with a jumper.
Shelby Wilcoxson made a pair of free throws to cap a 15-2 run that pulled Trimble County within one possession. Neal had a basket with 40 seconds left in the second quarter to give North Oldham a 29-24 lead.
Neal scored for the final points of the first half, extending North Oldham’s lead to five points at halftime.
Wilcoxson scored on the opening possession of the second half to cut Trimble County’s deficit to one possession, but Neal answered with a jumper in the lane. Vize had steals that led to layups on consecutive possessions to give North Oldham a 37-28 lead two minutes into the third quarter.
Wilcoxson was fouled on a 3-point attempt, making all three free throws to return Trimble County’s deficit to one possession midway through the third quarter.
Hale had a steal for a layup, Neal made a jumper and Vize hit another 3-pointer to return North Oldham’s lead to double digits.
Neal scored twice on consecutive possessions to begin the fourth quarter, giving North Oldham a 57-40 lead.
O’Connor made a pair of free throws with 3:18 left to cut Trimble County’s deficit to 62-51. After a Vize free throw, Ashby Irwin made a corner 3-pointer to extend North Oldham’s lead to 15 points with just over two minutes left.
Riley Neal led the Mustangs with 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists and Kylie Vize chipped in with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Mustangs now turn around with a 11 am game today v. Atherton at NOHS.
